Today I am a gardener
Jul 19th, 2007 by bornfamous
Well, sort of. After reading and ruminating about gardening for weeks, I got a slow start today. My new worm bin arrived, along with worms, and I got them all settled in their bedding. [Pics coming shortly.] Then, what the heck, I finally transplanted a rootbound pot of rosemary that I bought at a farmer’s market several weeks ago. Three other herbs didn’t last long enough for me to work up the courage.
This is all so alien to me that I’ve actually been afraid to garden on my little balcony. I tried once before and it wasn’t pretty. Let’s hope all the reading and thinking about what I really want to grow [as well as what the hot afternoon sun on my balcony will allow to grow] will help me avoid making the same mistakes.
One major mistake that first time was to plant tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers because, well, that’s what everybody else grows. But I don’t even like cucumbers and rarely eat tomatoes or peppers. I don’t know what I was thinking. This time, I’ve made a list of veggies I actually eat and enjoy. I’m reading up on which ones would do well in the conditions on my balcony, and which can be planted in late summer. Still haven’t decided, but I’m getting there. I’ll probably start with leafy greens and salad greens, and see how that goes before I plant anything else.
The other mistake was letting the plants dry out too much between watering and then drowning them, poor things. So I’ve ordered, and eagerly await, a self-watering planter. Hopefully that will save them from my absent-mindedness.
I think I’ve figured out what I need to do, but if anyone has suggestions I’d love to hear them.

There is just something about feeding my worms that makes me smile-I’m having a lot of fun with the worm bin. Good decision on growing the greens-they probably will do well for you. Sometimes it just takes a little experimenting to find plants and a set up that works.
