The pinholes in the bottles were too big. I'd make them smaller... but perhaps a better idea is a modification of <a href="http://pathtofreedom.com/peddlerswagon/garden/water%20savers/index.shtml" rel="nofollow">ollas</a>, clay pots buried in the soil with the mouth peeking out. You just pour water into the mouth and it seeps out as needed. These are way too big for a pot, but it might work for a large box, or maybe a smaller olla-type pot could be found/made.
