Project Gutenberg is one of those high-minded efforts that makes me think there is hope for the Internet after all. In case you haven’t heard of it yet, here’s how Wikipedia describes Project Gutenberg:

…a volunteer effort to digitize, archive, and distribute cultural works via book scanning. Founded in 1971, it is the oldest digital library. Most of the items in its collection are the full texts of public domain books. The project tries to make these as free as possible, in long-lasting, open formats that can be used on almost any computer.

Not only that, but anyone can download virtually any of the project’s thousands of public domain books, and use them any way they like — including reformatting, republishing and selling them. How cool is that?
