Light bulb moment

ProBlogger Darren Rowse has an interesting post about the importance of checking your blog’s stats:

I had grand visions of the blog being followed by friends and family wanting to see my photography. I also posted a short review of the camera I was using at the time.

Then Darren checked his stats and discovered that for every visitor to his photographs, there were twenty coming to read his camera review. He reconfigured his blog to a digital camera review site, and the rest is history. Now, Darren is in the cozy position of teaching the rest of us how to make a living with this strange little hobby.

Which got me to thinking about Bornfamous: what do people come here for? Well, according to my stats, they come here to find monkeys for sale, an old Ambrose Redmoon quote I posted years ago [great quote, but who the heck is that guy anyway?], and names of famous people born on this day [i.e., born famous--get it? I didn't until I saw the stats.]

I don’t plan on selling monkeys, and a web site based on the life of Ambrose Redmoon probably wouldn’t bring in much traffic, but the birthdays of famous people? Now I think we’re getting somewhere. I’ve been sitting on a gold domain for the past six years and didn’t even know it. All I have to do is round up famous birthdays, post ‘em here every day and sit back and wait for those Adsense bucks to roll in.

Well, it will take a little more work than that, but life is sweet.

whoa. Bloody brilliant. Following that process, my site would be turned over to a site about John Barstow, Willy Wonka and the song “pure imagination”and maybe some soup. Oh yeah, and quilts. Even though that’s the most sporadic thing going on my blog.
