My pathetic garden

At last, I have commandeered the digital camera long enough to show you the embarrassing results of my first gardening effort on the balcony:

I told you the tomato plants looked awful. I don’t lie. The Coke bottles are my attempt at a crude drip-watering system. It needs tweaking.

There is one good-looking tomato, just one. This is an heirloom plant. I don’t know what the other one is, but I’m getting heirloom seeds from now on.

A total of five jalapenos have come out. One is sitting on the kitchen window sill, shriveled and red, waiting for me to figure out what to do with it:

This is the only cucumber to come out. It’s about four inches long. I was shocked to spot it yesterday. It must have popped out overnight!

You got one more of each thing -tomato, pepper and cuke — than I got out of mine. The only thing I picked this year were some blackberries and I had nothing to do with them other than the picking. And now that the picking is done I get to go out and hack them back before they totally take over the yard.
My hope this year was/is to can some tomatoes/tomato sauce but economically I’m not sure I can buy tomatoes cheap enough to make it worthwhile. this makes me think the only way to do it is to a) befriend people who overplant things and need homes for produce or b) relent and try a backyard garden next year, damn the deer and groundhogs.
