What have I done?
Apr 1st, 2005 by bornfamous
Now that I’m committed to podcasting an hour-long health show once a week, I am in panic mode. I keep searching the web for health news, research, anything that might make a good first show–and I am in information overload. I can’t make up my mind, not only about a first topic but about the tone and structure of the show in general.
Should I do some health news headlines to start every show off? Should I just stick with the one topic for the whole hour? What about guests? How many interviews should I do in a show? How investigative should I get? That’s a LOT of freakin’ work, btw. Do people really want all that, or do they want more of a health tips kind of show? And what kind of show do I WANT to do? Don’t know. Can’t decide.
Can’t find the link right now, but I read somewhere that people want from podcasts what they can’t get in the regular media. Obviously, the dumbest thing for me to do would be to try to produce a slick, commercial show here in my little living room. Plus, I’m bored to tears with health segments on news shows anyway; why would I want to spend all my time trying to recreate another one?
Which is exactly what I’m panicking about: I don’t want to be stuck doing something that doesn’t interest me, week after week after week. I have ADD, folks. For us, boredom is torture, not to mention a recipe for failure. So it’s absolutely crucial that this be a labor of love.
And that brings me full circle to the desperate search for health information that interests ME. What I keep coming back to isn’t exactly about health–but then again it is: what fascinates me is the way the politicians, pharmaceutical giants, insurance industry and others are all trying to manipulate the public to their own advantage.
Oh yeah, podcast about THAT from your little living room, LaVonne.
Well, why not? Nothing like a juicy conspiracy theory to keep things interesting. Look at Art Bell.

How about talking about all that rusty has put you through with his substance abuse and subsequent mental illness? That would be real and you might just get rid of a few of your own demons at the same time.
But hey what the hell do I know he might be a saint.
Baby steps, my dear, baby steps.
blessed be.
well, the show is going to be about health, not my personal experience. but believe me, he’s no saint!
Lavonne: how about the latest -ology- to hit the West:
psychoneuroimmunology.
Not kidding.
Or: iatrogenic disease (=caused by physician intervention), followed by nosocomial damage to the immune system (=(caused by a stay in hospital).
That’ll be good for a laugh. Or rather a sob.
Have you listened to the Debra Ray show? Not sure how to spell it. She takes headlines and talks about them. Rather than researching for an hour-long show each week, that’s what I’d do. Take news items and current studies and talk about them. You could also answer people’s email questions. A couple each show. Good luck Lavonne!

lavonne…have you listened to Susie Bright’s podcasts? I should send you a couple of them. I have them. She does three segments in each show. Her shows are about sexual politics in general. But what she does is two segments that are basically her talking about something that has happened recently in the news and her take on it from a “sexual” standpoint and then she ends with answering email from her audience. it’s all very personable and light hearted and she laughs a lot.
great suggestions, everyone–thank you! psychoneuroimmunology and iatrogenics sound fascinating. and i will definitely check out debra ray’s and susie bright’s shows.
