Beddy-bye

I finally got a bed–a real bed!–yesterday, after sleeping [how many years, three? four? five?] on first a couch, then a chair, a cot and finally graduating to the luxury of an old mattress on the floor. Bought the bed from my friend Nicole, the lovely lady I met last spring when I briefly rented her granny flat in the mountains. Nicole

Unfortunately, after spending the night on it, I realized that I can’t tolerate the mattress despite its allergy cover and a plastic cover on top of that. Yep. Woke up with the dreaded Headache. The mattress is full of detergent and/or fabric softener fumes, which surprises me since it came from Nicole who also has chemical sensitivities. The box spring is okay though, and the old mattress I’ve been using [which Nicole gave me several months ago] works just fine. I switched the two when I woke up with the Headache, and gave it a spin. It’s actually more comfortable. Problem solved. I offered to give the smelly mattress to Emily’s parents for the apartment they’re moving into soon.

Other than the Headache, which is gone now, it was sooo nice to wake up painfree. It’s been a long time, since my couch days. That was the couch that was so laden with formaldehyde that even Robby started to get sick. What a nightmare that was. I haven’t had “normal” furniture in my living room since then. But that couch sure was comfortable to sleep on. Well, now I finally have soft place to sleep again.

I’m a happy camper.

Meanwhile, I’m trying to get myself going with yoga again. The mat and pillows await me on the floor. I did only about ten minutes yesterday, plus ten minutes meditation, but it was a good start. Nice and slow.

    Hya LaVonne,

In the UK a mattress or sofa or even slab of foam rubber bought at the market, MUST have flameretardant if it is to be sold. (The formaldehyde you mention probably). We had great problems with that and couldn’t bribe anybody to leave it out. They spray the foam just after you’ve paid for it. I was totally taken by surprise, and almost fainted from the unexpected fumes around me at the till. Horro.Needless to say we did not take the stuff home in spite of him not returning the cash.
But, these days here you can now get a dispensation from your local GP (doctor). Mine wouldn’t give me one, but my son managed to obtain a blanket dispensation.
Maybe you could as well, going through medical channels?
