Ain’t it the truth!
I’ve been reading the Tibetan Buddhist Revised Pratimoksha, or rules that guide Tibetan monks. They were revised recently from the Buddha’s classical precepts, to take into account the temptations of our modern world. Believe it or not, there’s some interesting reading–and good advice for all of us. Take this one:
A bhikshu [monk or nun] who uses the internet without another fellow-practitioner sitting beside him as a protection against losing himself in toxic programs, commits an offence for which he must express regret.
And I thought I was so good.
[Updated to add:]
Here’s one that I need to print out in large letters and frame:
A bhikshu has to know when to say “no” if he sees that his capability or his state of health are not sufficient to take on more work. He should not take on more work because he does not want to inconvenience others, when he knows that the work will make him anxious, tired and weary of life.
